Industrial wood pellets
According to the International Industrial wood pellet specification, there are 3 different quality grades of pellets : I1, I2 and I3. Most common is Industrial grade 2 (I2) pellets. Ash content in these pellets has to be below 1,5%.
Industrial wood pellets are burned in power plants for electricity production. They can be also used in combined power and heating plants and even in smaller heating plants. In most cases, power and heating plants, where pellets are used have been converted from coal to wood pellets. Pellets are not usually co-fired with other biomass products in this instance. Pellets may be used fully by the power plant or in 1-2 boilers of the big power station. In some cases, power and heating plants are able to use some other fuels, for example, gas. However, some power plants totally depend on the wood pellet supply. Power plants using just pellets require them all year round. Combined power and heating plants need much more pellets during heating season.
Very important issues for Wood Pellets are: particle size inside the pellets; dust formation connected to loading and unloading of the pellets and handling them at the power plant; temperature and moisture of the pellets; possible contamination of pellets, which may happen during their production and transportation; safety issues connected with production and transportation of pellets.
